This is a facsimile edition of a nearly forgotten little cookbook that epitomizes the spirit of the North Carolina’s Outer Banks and evokes a name that is legendary there: Chicamacomico.
Chicamacomico Cookery is a collection of unique local family recipes contributed by residents of Rodanthe, Waves and no doubt other parts of the barrier island that extends north from Cape Hatteras.
The book was published originally more than 50 years ago as a fund raiser by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Company.

This book is a remarkable collection of some of the most popular American comfort food recipes from the second half of the Twentieth Century. They were collected and perfected by Joan Knechel, an amazing housewife in Quakertown, Pa.
After Joan died in 2014, her family discovered that she had accumulated an astounding 1,400 recipes. They were in her handwriting as well as that of her mother Florence (1914-1988) and her grandmother Suzanne (1875-1950). It was an accumulation 100 years.
